The Egmont Institute has the pleasure to invite you to an Africa Lunch Meeting on 6 November 2019 with Dr. Greg Mills, Director of the Brenthurst Foundation, and Mr. Tendai Biti, a human rights activist and former Zimbabwe finance minister. They co-authored the recently published book Democracy Works. Turning Politics to Africa’s Advantage (Hurst Publishing, 2019).

They will discuss how democracy is an essential foundation to sustainable development, and examine the political, economic and extreme demographic challenges the African continent faces in pursuing democracy.

They propose ways in which democracy in Africa can be nurtured and deepened, looking beyond the organisation of regular elections. Democracy is fundamentally about the inner working of institutions, the rule of law, separation of powers, checks and balances, and leadership in government and civil society, as much as it is about values and the welfare and well-being of its citizens.
