  • Sven Biscop addressed the internal-external security nexus at the 5th annual Security Research Conference in Ostend on 23 Sept. 2010, arguing that the main focus of CSDP will remain crisis management operations outside the EU. -- See the video of his lecture: "After Lisbon: The continuum of internal and external security".
  • Steven Van Bockstael presented a paper on the interface between artisanal mining and smallholder farming in Liberia, at the Biennial Conference of the African Studies Association of the UK, organised at St. Anthony's College of the University of Oxford (16-19 Sept.). He also participated in an expert panel on mining and smallholder farming in Ghana and Western Africa, at the University of Reading (20 Sept.).
  • On 16 Sept. 2010 Sven Biscop delivered the opening keynote speech at a conference in Madrid about the state of the art of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) since the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, organized by the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the Real Instituto Elcano.
  • On 26 July 2010 Sven Biscop addressed the security dimension at a workshop on "The EU and Asia: Inter-regionalism and Asia-Europe Cooperation", hosted by Fudan University in Shanghai. On that occasion, he was officially awarded the title of Senior Research Associate of the Centre for European Studies at the Renmin University of China (CESRUC) in Beijing, which co-organized the workshop and where he has been a frequent guest lecturer.
  • At an expert seminar on Permanent Structured Cooperation in Defence organized by the Belgian Presidency of the EU in the Royal Military Academy on 13 July 2010, Sven Biscop spoke in the last panel, which was chaired by Jo Coelmont, about the strengths and opportunities of the concept and its added value at the EU and the national level. In the run-up to the seminar, the EU Institute for Security studies published the views of Prof. Biscop and Brig-Gen. Coelmont as EUISS Opinion - Press release.
  • On 29 June 2010 at UNRIC in Brussels, Brig-Gen (R) Jo Coelmont gave the lecture "Het belang van de niet-militaire aspecten van vredesoperaties" - Report.
  • On 18 June 2010 at the graduation ceremony of the College of Europe in Bruges, Brig-Gen (R) Jo Coelmont on behalf of the Institute handed the first ever Egmont Award for the Best Thesis on the External Relations of the EU to Mr. Tobias Felix Franke, for his MA dissertation "Nosce Te Ipsum – Positioning the EU’s CSDP as a Regional Ordnungsmacht".

  • At the request of Belgian Foreign Affairs, on 8 March Egmont organized a roundtable with two members of the Group of Experts preparing a new strategic concept for NATO, Ambassador Fernando Perpiñá-Robert Peyra and Professor Adam Daniel Rotfeld, who met with expert academics and journalists from Belgium as part of their round of consultations with civil society in all Allied countries.
