Basic Generic Training

Concept

The BGT is an integrated training for candidates interested in civilian CSDP missions, regrouping federal police officers, magistrates, civil servants of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and external experts. A maximum of 24 candidates can participate per session and each entity is responsible for the selection of their own candidates.

The BGT objective is to get a pool of trained personnel liable for possible deployment, by providing the participants with a general overview of political, judicial and police themes related to civilian crisis management and rule of law-missions.

The Egmont Institute has been affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the developing phase of a 2-week training curriculum in line with EU guidelines regarding training standard objectives and has been associated with its coordination and organization.

The training, in English, is organized twice a year and meant to become compulsory for deployment. It is delivered by four trainers (provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Police and the Egmont Institute), as well as expert speakers and practitioners.

The BGT is the first ‘integrated’ training ever organized in preparing civilian personnel. The first pilot BGT took place in March 2009 and the second session took place in November 2009.
