Research Programme Political stability and state building in Central Africa

Concept

The security situation in Central Africa has largely improved since the end of the armed conflicts. Elections were organized in Burundi and the DRC and state building activities have been progressively implemented. However, despite these positive steps, the political situation in both countries remains extremely precarious (political crisis in Burundi, poor performance of the DDR/SSR programs, impact of the situation in Eastern DRC, etc.).

The aim of this research is to examine the evolution of the political institutions of the Central African countries. It focuses on the institution building and the functioning of the political system. Important elements include: the relationships between the institutions, the analysis of the political structure, the evolution of the political parties, decentralisation (DRC), corruption, development of the rule of law, the role of the international community (including China, South Africa, Angola, etc.).
