European Security and Defence College (ESDC)

Concept

The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) is a network of educational establishments responsible for providing training to civilian and military personnel in the field of European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP), promoting a common understanding of that policy and disseminating best practice in this area.

Egmont is a member institute of the ESDC network and is represented in the ESDC Executive Academic Board by Sven Biscop, who is a regular lecturer in many of the courses, and has contributed extensively to the “ESDC Internet-based Distance Learning module” and to the Handbook on CSDP.

In collaboration with the Royal Higher Institute of Defence, Egmont co-organizes Module 1 of the annual High-Level Course,
as well as Module 1 of the annual Advanced Course for Political Advisors in EU Missions and Operations. Have a look at the training programme of ESDC.

The Annual CSDP High Level Course will address the main CFSP/CSDP policies, developments and trends and will provide a forum for in-depth debate on current and emerging CSDP issues for senior civilian and military officials, in line with the principles and objectives of the Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy for the European Union.

The Advanced Course for Political Advisors (EDSC) is organised by the Egmont Institute, the Austrian National Defence Academy and the Geneva Center for Security Studies. Target audience: political advisors working in national capitals, EU institutions, EU agencies, as well as in EU missions and operations. It provides participants an understanding of the tasks and challenges they will face as political advisors in an EU mission or operation at both the operational and strategic levels. It details the core principles of the EU’s External Action as well as the framework, skills and working techniques for political advisors both in capitals and in the field. The course also creates the space for participants to form networks in their field – especially valuable for a growing profession.
