“Multilateral Cooperation in a Geopolitical World: How to Adapt to Today’s Challenges from the recent experience of the International Organization for Migration (IOM)”
From its origins as an agency set up to facilitate the movement of displaced people in Europe in the aftermath of World War II, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has evolved into the leading intergovernmental organization addressing the complex realities of migration. With a presence in 171 countries, an annual budget in 2024 of close to USD 4 billion, and 22,000 staff, IOM supports governments and civil society to enhance the benefits of migration while protecting the rights and dignity of migrants.
As the global context becomes increasingly shaped by geopolitical tensions and crises, IOM is adapting to remain agile, impactful, and principled. This high-level lunchtime discussion will explore how multilateral organizations like IOM are responding to these shifting dynamics, especially in the fields of migration management and humanitarian aid.
We are particularly honoured to welcome Mr Kim Eling, Senior Director of the Office of Strategy and Organizational Performance at IOM, as our keynote speaker. Mr Eling will begin by addressing the broader global context before focusing more specifically on the recent experience of the IOM, sharing insights into the organization’s strategic evolution and the broader implications for international cooperation in today’s volatile/unpredictable environment.
