Johan Verbeke
Biography
Johan Verbeke has been a Belgian diplomat for over 35 years. He has been the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, director of European Affairs and Chief of Staff of two successive Ministers of Foreign Affairs. He was Belgium's Permanent Representative to the UN representing the country before the Security Council. He then became the UN Secretary General's Special Representative (SRSG) in Lebanon first and Georgia later. He ended his career as Ambassador in London and finally in Washington. Johan Verbeke is currently a professor at the Universities of Brussels and Ghent where he teaches courses on diplomacy and international negotiations. He is the author of two recent publications: “Diplomatic Skills - The Basics” (Academic and Scientific Publishers, 2022, Brussels) and “Diplomacy in Practice - A Critical Approach” (Routledge, 2023, Oxford-New York).
