Trainee Project Assistant for the European Affairs Programme

The Egmont Institute is looking for a talented, skilled, and motivated trainee to join our European Affairs Programme as Project Assistant starting from 5 January 2026. The position involves providing logistical and organizational support for our projects and events and assisting in research activities.
Requirements
• Master’s degree in European studies, political science, international relations, law, or a related discipline
• Knowledge of the internal workings of the EU institutions and decision-making processes
• Excellent drafting and editing skills
• Excellent organizational skills, capable of handling multiple tasks and prioritizing, being responsive and a fast learner and have attention to detail; experience in the organization of events in the field of EU affairs and/or experience in EU projects are considered an advantage
• Fluency in English, and in French or Dutch is an asset
• Knowledge of MS Office
• Interest in working in a multicultural team
• Eligible to work in Belgium (EU citizen or valid work permit)
Our offer
We offer remunerated traineeship for a period of 6 months, starting on 5 January 2026.The successful candidate will join our dynamic office, where everyone plays an important role and has an impact. He/she/they will be in contact with representatives of the Belgian MFA, EU institutions, think tanks and academic organizations across Europe. The traineeship provides an opportunity to broaden your network in these circles and to fully experience the day-to-day work of a Brussels-based think tank.

Call for Expressions of Interest – CSDP Training Experts Pool

About the programme
Since 2009, the Education & Training Programme of the Egmont Institute, together with the Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs, the Federal Police and FPS Justice, delivers the Basic Generic Training (BGT) on Civilian Crisis Management.
- Duration: 2-week intensive course (English)
- Frequency: Three editions per year – two non-residential sessions in Brussels and one hybrid session (Brussels + Brühl, Germany)
- Alignment: Curriculum follows the EU Common Security & Defence Policy (CSDP) objectives and prepares participants to operate on CSDP civilian missions.

Why we need additional experts
The core training team consists of three lead trainers (Federal Police, FPS Justice, and a third expert). To expand capacity, we are building an expert pool that can be called upon for one, two or three BGT editions per year.
Because the work relies heavily on teamwork and continuity, we are looking for seasoned professionals who can complement the existing team and contribute to the smooth delivery of the programme.
What the role involves
- Join the Egmont Institute’s CSDP Training Experts pool once selected.
- Be available to facilitate BGT sessions when your specific expertise matches the training needs.
- Contribute to the design, delivery, and evaluation of role-plays, simulations and other adult-learning activities.
Requirements
Essential requirements:
The experts should have the following qualifications:
- Previous experience in a CSDP mission (minimum of 3 years);
- Previous experience in training/facilitating/adult-learning activities (minimum of 10 years) including the development (design), oversight and implementation of role-plays and simulations;
- Being able to conduct evaluations on role plays and use various feedback methodologies for adult learning and skill implementation (hard and soft);
- from 1 to 4 weeks);
- Experience in training in at least 5 fields indicated below (*);
- Up to date knowledge of the EU CSDP architecture;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Excellent ability to manage groups with various professional backgrounds and group dynamics;
- Having worked with professionals that have a police and/or gendarmerie background;
- Fluency in English;
- Be eventually available to work two weeks in a row;
- Eligible to work in Belgium (EU citizen or valid work permit).
Desirable requirements:
- Fluency in Dutch and French;
- Familiarity with the Belgium’s national coordination system for crisis management
- Familiarity with the EU-recruitment system for CSDP missions
- Familiarity with UN, OSCE & NATO missions
- Coaching skills, resilience, adaptability, time management, problem solving, flexibility.

The Egmont Institute offers student internships in both their Communications & Events department and in the European Affairs Programme. Please make sure to apply to the correct one!
The Communications & Events department of the Egmont Institute is regularly looking for the assistance of a full-time Intern for periods of 3-5 months during the academic year. The student internship is not remunerated, is onsite in our Brussels office, and must be combined with ongoing Masters studies in a Belgian university. Our working language is primarily English, so a minimum C1 level is required.

The European Affairs Programme at the Egmont Institute regularly seeks a full-time Intern to support its research activities and events for 3–4-month periods during the academic year. Knowledge of the internal workings of the EU institutions and decision-making processes is essential.
This onsite internship, based in our Brussels office, is unpaid and must be combined with ongoing studies in a Belgian university. The working language is English, and proficiency in Dutch or French is an asset. We are looking for a fast learner with a positive attitude and a wide range of interests.
