The illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW) has a significant impact on peace and security across the globe. In recent years lethal terrorist attacks, an upsurge in gang and drug market related drug market gun violence in several European countries, and the Russian military invasion in Ukraine have fuelled policy and law enforcement attention of the illicit proliferation of SALW in Europe. In this conversation Nils Duquet (Director of the Flemish Peace Institute) will discuss the scope of this illicit proliferation and the characteristics and recent trends with regard to the trafficking of these weapons into and within the EU. He will also discuss possible future developments and measures to counter illicit proliferation SALW.
