The Egmont Institute is pleased to host Professor Miles Tendi’s presentation of his latest book: “The Overthrow of Robert Mugabe: Gender, Coups, and Diplomats“.
The book argues that the 2017 military coup that overthrew Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, and the generality of coups, cannot be accurately and rigorously understood without examining the crucial role of gender and women’s politics in military seizures of power.
Despite the existence of an anti-coup norm and democracy promotion in Africa by Western states, Zimbabwe’s 2017 coup was not publicly condemned or penalized by Western and African diplomats. The book sheds light on the politics and diplomacy that stunt the anti-coup norm, creating space for the resurgence of coup-born governments in Africa.
Professor Miles Tendi teaches politics in the University of Oxford’s Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) and the African Studies Centre (ASC).
