The 2022 Global Strategy PhD Prize Awarded
ESDC and Egmont Award the 2022 Global Strategy PhD Prize
The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) and the Egmont Institute award the 2022 edition of the annual Global Strategy PhD Prize to Dr Linde Desmaele, a Senior Associate Researcher at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) at the Brussels School of Governance (BSoG-VUB), and a Stanton Nuclear Security Fellow in the Security Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The jury warmly praises her dissertation for its grand sweep: Not Whether but How Europe Matters: A Neoclassical Realist Analysis of the Evolution of the Role of Europe in US Grand Strategy (2001-2020). Her profound analysis is most relevant for academics and policymakers alike, as the transatlantic relationship continues to evolve in the light of domestic changes in the US (and the EU) and the changing balance of power on the international scene. Moreover, this superbly written dissertation is also simply a really good read – and that matters too.
Warmest congratulations to Dr Desmaele on behalf of the jury: Holger Osterrieder (Head of the ESDC, co-chair), Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop (Egmont & Ghent University, co-chair), Dr Jan Joel Andersson (EUISS), Tanja Zegers (European Commission) Dr Daniel Fiott (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), Dr Eva Gross (EEAS), and Prof. Dr Luis Simón (Vrije Universiteit Brussel & Real Instituto Elcano).
