At this Africa Lunch Meeting, Prof. Nic Cheeseman from the University of Birmingham discussed the process, outcomes and future outlook of the 2017 Kenyan elections. Based on a firsthand account and a decade of studying Kenyan politics, Prof. Nic Cheeseman analysed the controversy surrounding the elections, including the role played by international actors, the performance of the electoral commission, and the strategies of the rival political leaders. He contextualized the unprecedented annulment of the election results by the Supreme Court and set out the issues at stake in the re-run of the elections on 26 October.
