The UK has embarked on a profound re-assessment of its membership of the EU. Its historical ambivalence about participating in European integration has been heightened by the Eurozone’s move to a closer political union. The UK is also returning its sights to global emerging markets to try to rekindle sustainable economic growth. Can the UK finally find a way of merging its domestic, European and international ambitions? Or is the country’s emotional detachment leading to a formal break?
