Filip Reyntjens is Professor Emeritus in Law and Politics at the University of Antwerp. He is one of the foremost internationally renowned experts on independent Rwanda’s history and politics. His latest book is a brillant synthesis of the more recent political history of Rwanda, identifying continuities and ruptures. Continuities throughout precolonial, colonial and independent Rwanda include concentration of power, intra-regime factional conflict, salience of ethnicity and the strong nature of the state. Discontinuities include the role of the military, and the role played by ethnicity. This analytical re-reading of Rwanda’s political history provides an illuminating understanding of present-day Rwanda.
