The EU transition to a low-carbon society may be described as the “third industrial revolution”, requiring a long-term strategy for sustainable, competitive and secure energy. Massive transformation of the energy sector from production, transportation and distribution to use and storage are needed. The multifaceted challenge posed by this transformation has become a central long-term geopolitical, economic, environmental and social concern for Europe.
