The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union constituted a watershed moment for the process of European integration. It proved simultaneously possible for a member state to leave the Union and to maintain unity amongst the remaining member states. As such, the European institutions have passed what was arguably the most important stress test since the empty chair crisis in 1965. In his new book Inside the Deal Stefaan De Rynck elaborates on how the EU negotiation team delivered a new relationship with the UK that is in line with the integrity of the single market and other core EU interests. In this exclusive Egmont expert exchange, he will detail how the European Commission’s Brexit Task Force completed its mandate and what this tells us about the future of the European project.
