Amnesties can be justified by the fragile political context in Algeria and contribute to reducing levels of violence in the country, but its effective contribution to peace and reconciliation more broadly will be limited. This is because it has not been accompanied by other political and economic measures necessary to bring peace and stability to the country. The amnesty furthermore promotes amnesia and largely ignores the plight of victims.
