Joel Mallen Sabaté
Biography
Joel Mallen Sabaté joined the Egmont Institute in January 2026 as a Programme Assistant within the Education & Training Programme. He is currently pursuing a Diploma of Specialisation in International Humanitarian Law and International Criminal Justice at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC).
Prior to this, Joel completed a Master’s degree in International Security Studies, graduating with highest distinction. His master’s thesis explored the ethical and legal challenges raised by drones and emerging technologies in contemporary warfare. He also obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona), specialising in International Relations. His Bachelor’s dissertation examined the Islamic State and debates around the concept of terrorism.
Before joining Egmont, he worked in Brussels in EU policy and project work. His interests include peacebuilding, the protection of civilians, armed conflict, terrorism and radicalisation, and security and defence policy.
